Water softener study to be
discussed at Aquatech USA Results of the Battelle Institute study on the benefits of water softeners — and how the results can be used in product market- ing materials — will be discussed in detail at WQA Aquatech USA 2010. WQA Technical Director Joe Harrison, PE, CWS-VI and Vincent M. Kent, MP, CWS-I, CI, of Abendroth Water Conditioning Inc. will conduct an overview of the study on Wednesday, March 10. A keynote speech, titled “How to Effectively Market the Softened Water Energy Efficiency Study (aka The Battelle Study),” will be followed by a marketing presentation on Thursday, March 11. The panel presentation will feature: Robert A. Hague, CWS-VI, Hague Quality Water International; Douglas S. “Sam” Karge, Pentair Water; Vincent M. Kent, MP, CWS-I, CI, Abendroth Water Conditioning, Inc.; and Eric B. Rosenthal, Culligan International.
The Battelle Memorial Institute, a non- profit international science and technology enterprise, was retained by the Water Quality Research Foundation to develop and run the tests. The study evaluates the energy and costs in heating water versus the savings with softened water and also examines the effects on washing machines, faucet fix- tures, showerheads and dishwashers using hard water versus softened water.
Proposed law would require new
projects to capture rainwater The Los Angeles Department of Public Works has proposed a law that would require new homes, larger developments and some redevelopment projects to cap- ture and reuse rainwater in order to control runoff, which would improve water quali- ty and recharge groundwater. If the ordinance is approved, builders will be required to install rainwater storage
tanks, permeable pavement, infiltration swales or curb bump-outs. Those not able to control 100 percent of a project’s runoff would be required to pay a storm water pollution mitigation fee. Board of Public Works Commissioner Paula Daniels said she hoped the ordi- nance, which would prevent 104 million gallons of runoff from reaching the ocean, will be approved and in effect by 2011.
